ENIGE REACTIES OP DE SYLVESTER-FANTASY

Geschreven in opdracht van het Nederlands Instituut voor de Blaasmuziek voor de Nederlandse Brassband Kampioenschappen in 1995 die in December in de Doelen te Rotterdam werden gehouden, voor de 3e divisie als verplicht werk.
  Het werd geschreven in de Kerst-Nieuwjaarstijd, rond nieuwjaar, de ‘Sylvestertijd’ dus, en de première zou ook in die tijd plaatsvinden...
Uiteindelijk vond de première, 20 jaar later, ook plaats in die tijd van het jaar (heel Zuid-Duitsland was al in de kerstsfeer! -zie de foto's van het reisverslag!!). 
Veel later ontdekte de componist dat de toonsoort G groot, waarin het werk eindigt, de meest typische Kerstmuziek-toonsoort was!
(de 12 heilige nachten van de kersttijd vallen dan ook samen met de Sylvester-tijd...)
  
Als voorbeeld voor het componeren voor Brassband in de derde divisie had de componist het werk 'Inspiration' van Jan de Haan genomen.

  Een belangrijk interval in het werk is de ‘overmatige terts’ die net zo klinkt als de reine kwart (bv. des-fis, oplossend in c-g).
Het begin, de inleiding is een uitwerking van dit motief met kwint en overmatige terts etc.

Later is er om de eisen van de Brassbands en de commissie (vertegenwoordigd door Klaas van der Woude) ter wille te zijn een lyrische passage toe- ofwel tussengevoegd met solo-passages voor alle ‘aanvoerders’ van de brassband. Dit is een zeer somber, duister en klaaglijk gedeelte. (maat 32-95)

Na de meer plechtige en afwachtende inleiding, en in de versie voor Brassband, het klaaglijke intermezzo voor de soli, volgt een somber koraal, bestaande uit mineur-akkoorden (harmonisch een beetje geïnspireerd op Jan van der Roost...) wat uitmondt in een soort plechtige, Mars-achtige beweging.

Er volgt hierna een polyfoon gedeelte, een soort vrije fuga met orgelpunt waarin alle partijen een melodie-inzet krijgen.

Hierna gaat de plechtige mars-achtige beweging weer verder wat uitmondt in een groots, majestueus slot-gedeelte met de apotheose van het beginthema.

Written in commission from the Dutch Institute for the Wind music for the Dutch Brassband Championships in 1995, which were held in December in 'De Doelen' in Rotterdam, for the third division as mandatory work.
 It was written in the time around Christmas / New year, the 'Sylvestertime', and it would be also performed in that period... Also the premiere (20 years later) took place around that time. (Germany was completely in the Christmas mood! See the picture show of the trip to the premiere!)  Much later, the composer discovered that the tone scale of G major, in which the work ends, is the most typical tone scale for Christmas music (and the 12 holy nights of christmas are around the Sylvestertime)...
The composer did look to the work 'Inspiration' from Jan de Haan as example how to compose for Brassbands in the third division.

An important interval in the work is the 'augmented three', which sounds juist like the perfect fourth (f.e. Des-Fis, going to C-G).
The beginning passage, the entrance is a passage, processing this theme with fifth and augmented three etc.
Later, there has been added, in order to admit to the demands of the brassbands and the commission (represented by Klaas van der Woude), a lyrical passage with soli for all the leaders of the brassband, which is a very sad, complaining and dark passage.... (bar 32-95)
   After the solemn and more cautious beginning part, and in the version for brassband, the complaining intermezzo for the soli, there follows a sad choral, with minor chords (harmonically somewhat inspired on Jan van der Roost) which goes to a sort of solemn, march-like movement.
 Now, there follows a polyphonic passage, a sort of free fugue with pedal, in which all the parts get a melody deployment.
After this passage the solemn march like movement goes on which ends in a majestic closing part with the apotheosis of the beginning theme.
