-In de Orkestvariaties is het ‘thema’ een 12-toonsreeks die 11 x wordt ‘gevarieerd’ (en getransponeerd). De stemmingen of karakters die daarbij passeren zijn: Mystiek-meditatief (denken / geest) en streng; romantisch (voelen / ziel) en motorisch (willen / lichaam, -een dans en een mars).
Het karaktermodel hierbij is de expositie van een Bruckner-symphonie
(1e deel) zoals bv. Bruckners 9e, met haar 3 thema’s (de 3 zielekrachten,
ofwel: Het Goddelijke, het menselijke en het natuurlijke).
Hierna volgt een vrije variatie als een soort doorwerking, de geestesstrijd
verbeeldend en uitmondend in een dramatische climax (het Godsgericht), gevolgd door het coda met de 12-toonsreeks in haar grondvorm, en verwijzend naar het slot van een Bruckner-symphonie (bv. de 4e en de 8e) : De gang van de duisternis naar het licht (dood en opstanding).
In the Orchestravariations we find variations on a 12-tone-row, but the moods are similar to for example the first part of Bruckners 9^th symphony: We find 3 themes: 1/ Divine, spiritual, God-like; 2/ Romantic, soul, humanlike; 3/ natural, body, naturelike, movements, a dance and a march; In the next part, parts of the row are freely used, it is like a crisis and goes to a disastrous, fatefull climax; Instead of a reprise of the 3 ‘themes’ the Coda follows, the row in its first form returns, and it is the apotheosis of light and ressurection….
